A “recovering professional Christian” walks away from institutional religion to find a simple shared spirituality. How about you? Are you “de-churched” or “never churched’ because of what the words “Christian” and “church” have come to be associated with? Join co-journers on the path toward mutual care, mutual learning, and mutual experiences of the Holy.

People of faith have a long history of apostasy and idolatry as they look for quick fixes and end up following false prophets and worshipping man-made gods. In this open letter to my Christian kin, I bear my broken heart to my evangelical brothers and sisters and speak prophetically, calling Jesus’ followers to confess, repent, receive forgiveness, and recommit to Jesus Christ and his way, his truth, and his life. We are called to more than mere belief – we are called to embody Christ.

I’ve been an incurable punster for most of my life. When Rick Warren published his wildly popular book The Purpose-Driven Life I wanted to write a response to his “It’s all in God’s will” Reformed theology because the course of your life is not predetermined and free will is real. And life is more than about being “driven.” It turned out to be a more playful response, as you can see from the title. The subtitle invites you to find “wisdom from the cetacean nation” – cetaceans include dolphins, whales, and porpoises.

In John 14:12 Jesus declares, “Those who follow me will do the works of ministry that I have been doing among you, and greater works because I am returning to my Father.” In other words, all who follow Jesus are to be active ministers in his name. What if more people of faith engaged their passions for people and The Creation, calling upon the Holy Spirit to reveal their gifts for ministry and become “little Christs” to each other and the people around them? People of faith don’t need the invitation or the permission of highly trained professional Christians to be the presence of Christ where they live, work, and play.
